The Rani Edit

This is where I think out loud. I share new writing, personal reflections, what I'm reading and thinking about, and glimpses of what I'm working on, often before they appear anywhere else. Expect stories about food, memory, ritual, technology, pleasure, place and the strange business of being human, plus first invitations to events and experiences, book news and notes from whatever I'm creating next.

If you’ve seen my Instagram photos, you already know that I spent the August Bank Holiday weekend at the All Together Now festival with friends, dancing, laughing, eating, listening to brilliant music and generally having a very good time, and it got me thinking again about something I keep coming back to: Pleasure is Intelligence.

I met my lovely husband at a festival, so heading off to one together always feels a little bit magical for us.

And yes, sometimes I like to be a little wild. I don’t believe living well means always being 'good', sensible or perfectly ‘well’, or feeling guilty for the nights when you stay out late, party on and have a brilliant time. And when I choose those moments a foggy head in the morning is definitely worth it for me.

We spend so much of our lives being told what is good for us, what we should be doing and how we could be doing life better, but sometimes I think we forget to pay attention to the things that simply make us feel alive.

Pleasure isn’t about escaping real life or pretending everything is wonderful. Life is complicated and messy and sometimes really hard. But knowing what brings you joy, what makes you want to stay a little longer, dance a little more, laugh until your face hurts, or sit with people you love, is information too.

Maybe we should take that information a little more seriously.

All Together Now was a very good reminder of that for me, and frankly, dancing in a field with your friends isn’t a bad way to do the research.

Pleasure is Intelligence.

Grateful to be living life Yummie,
